I was in a meeting this week where I was told that Social Media was.. Not Fun! Of course the person who was telling me this was one of the many business owners who expect to sell every person their services…if not..it is not fun to them.
Posting only promotional articles is just one of the many examples of how to use social media that is wrong and is filling business owners with unrealistic expectations.
Social Media Could Be Fun
However, this statement about Social Media not being fun got me to thinking about what is fun about Social Media. So, here are two things I can think of that makes Social Media fun.
1. Business/Social Networking
Business and Social Networking is just one benefit of Social Media. Getting out and meeting people online or offline builds self confidence. One of things that work in social media to enhance the business/social networking is online social networking.
I will be the first to admit when Twitter came out I was not positive and I still have some reservations on its worthiness. I still have concerns with its longevity if the Spamming is not gotten under control. However, Twitter does bring attention to the person tweeting quality content more so than many of the other social networking micro-blogging platforms. And…it can be fun once you meet the right REAL people.
Business and social networking should be rewarding both online of offline. It is fun to learn what other people do as a hobby or as a profession. It is fun to gain another friend simply because you like a lot of the same things in life. And it is fun to gain another client.
So, overall, business/social networking is a lot of fun.
2. Build Community
Social Media is a very strong tool for building a community or circle of influence to whatever it is you are out to achieve. The same methods of social media used to build a business community also works for personal endeavors. Even on a personal basis having a community of friends to talk to really makes being in the community fun.
On the business side of things, having an online or offline community of peers really can bring more fun to working. Having someone to talk to about business issues or just to ‘do lunch’ makes being part of a business community fun.
Social Media does not have to be as much of a challenge and drudgery as many people are making it out to be. And forcing social media to generate an ROI will not work either.
Social Media is just part of a plan everyone should have in their life and especially in business. Making life fun is within everyone’s reach if they want it to be and social media makes the fun happen.
Let me know how I can help.
