Coming from the corporate world of “if we don’t control it we don’t want it” attitudes, I found the phrase ‘Social Media’ to be very strange. However, after befriending a few of the Jedi Knight Ninjas of social media I was quickly put on track of what the phrase really meant. Looking back I saw my 31 years of training I received was on the fundamentals of what today is commonly know as social media. This places what I know how to do ahead of most people who are in the social media field.
What I have found energizing is the way I use the effective methods of social media. My methods are more fundamentally fun than how others use it.
Fun? Yes, if what you are doing is not fun then why do it. Same goes for Social Media. If how you are going about promoting your business through online and offline social and business networking is not fun then why are you doing it????
Some people say that promoting your business has to be taken seriously. That is true, but nothing said that serious can not be fun. Look at the current AT&T vs Verizon 3g network ad campaigns. This is serious business for both firms but they have made their social media effort fun to the consumers.
How I make the way I use Social Media fun is with playing golf with people to find out more about their business needs and how I can help them. This usually results in me showing them how to use the internet to facilitate their business needs online and offline. Now, wasn’t that fun?
What I also find fun is when business people drop their feelings that they need to hide behind their logos and not show their face. Getting them to do it is hard and not fun, but once they do it more business comes to them from consumers though having better trust in who it is they are doing business. Positive results in business is where the fun begins.
What is not fun is watching all the so called Social Media experts attempt to fill the blogsphere and Twitter with nonsense on the need to track results from all the social media effort. Not sure how they feel that is fun to do since all of the validation results and measurement programs for social media are really just a guess not based certainties.
The entire premise of Social Media is based on drawing attention to something by using effective communication through social channels. What draws consumers to something is…Fun. If it is Fun they will come. So..make your Social Media fun..life is too short worrying about the ROI. Let me know how I can help.
