The time is growing near for the term Social Networking to be replaced with Community Building. Yes, saying social networking does kinda roll off the tongue, but is social networking really what you are actually doing when you are social networking?
I, like all of you, are a member of a number of social networking groups. The ones that really work for me are more than a network of people I socialize with. It is a community of people I depend on for a number of things.
Like a social network I depend on the community for suggestions, answers, information and leads. However, I also depend on the community for humor, entertainment, inspiration and FUN.
The main difference between the terms network and community is with the Social Network you join in what is already created and in the Community you Build what is not created. A community can be a niche or actually a community of people and businesses you put together. A social networking group usually is not organized and you have to dig to find what you need.
In this fast paced world which is getting faster, the community that a person is part of needs to be tight and filled with certainty. So, I will now refer to my social network as my community or The community. It makes more sense and actually describes what it is better.
