I get requests all day long from people I don’t know wanting to schedule a ‘meeting’. And, I get almost as many requests from other people who I do know who will quickly say…’ let’s schedule a call.
When actually what the people I don’t know are asking is to have a quick call…not a meeting. And the people I know who I talk to on the phone a lot who say let’s schedule a call are requesting we have a sitdown meeting with an agenda.
HUGE Difference
Like it or not there is a HUGE difference between having a “Call” and having a “Meeting”.
Having a Call with someone is looked at as having a less formal conversation than a meeting. A call usually doesn’t have an agenda and is more of an interview.
Now, with a meeting..things should be more formal and there should be an agenda. However, the younger…less-experienced…business leaders of the work are attempting to reverse how business people communicate.
HUGE Misunderstanding
Most of this misunderstanding is being talked about (a lot) in the corporate world.
What many of the business leaders of established corporations are finding the change in how simple oral communication is made is coming from many of their under-40 employees who feel the company needs to change their operations to have a MORE inclusive & diverse workplace.
What that really means is the self-proclaimed ‘creatives’ of the world want the established businesses of the world to change their harmonious work environment to being less disciplined so they can provide more disruptive ways of not working. OUCH!
Yes, that is a little harsh to say but that seems to be what the ‘Change Culture’ movement is saying they want businesses to do.
HUGE Waste of Time
By today’s definition of being “A Creative”, ….someone who creates and develops… I have been “A Creative” all my life. However, most of the people saying they are “A Creative” are not creative and have never developed anything.
Actually, now that I think about it…there are a few of the people claiming to be “A Creative” who are not that creative and never finish anything they say they are developing”. The leaders of many of the businesses who are hiring these “Creatives” are finding they are the deadwood of their business.
Just like the self-proclaimed “Millennial”. I feel we were ALL once a Millennial.
BUT I Digress!
Asking someone to schedule a call when you mean a meeting is, I am guessing, the creative culture way of making a change in communication that really is NOT working.
I hear people changing up the way something that is talked about a lot to being a new way of saying something. That is OK…I recommend to all of the content providers for the video podcasts that I am the executive producer of to find a different way to say what they say over and over. Changing how someone says something provides diversity in their delivery style.
Unfortunately, saying let’s schedule a Call when you mean Let’s pull up two chairs and meet…if not diversity. And for those who say “Let’s Meet on that” but mean “Call me”…well, there is not much inclusivity in saying that.
Change is good, but changing something just to be different is…Not.
Let me know how I can help.
