2 Reasons Why Creatives Need Business Operations Experience

January 4, 2021 By Scot Duke

creativeOK, so you call yourself a visual thinker. You feel your strength is in you trusting your intuition.  And…One of the many things you claim you like doing is solving problems.

If any of the above sounds like you, you probably consider yourself being in a Creative Culture.

Whether you’re an artist hoping to open your own gallery or a graphic designer trying to land an agency or in-house job, you probably do not refer to yourself as a “business person.”

But believe it or not, one day you could find yourself responsible for tracking budgets, balancing financial statements, estimating sample sizes, and more.  What happens when this happens?

Most of the time Creatives find they are great at doing all of the things it takes to create a business but fail miserably at running a business.  Why?  Because creatives usually lack any experience in business operations.

Here are 2 reasons why creatives need business operations experience:

1. Be Able To Collaborate With Others More Effectively

Obtaining business experience will naturally develop into business operations experience.  The operation of a business is the heart of a business.  Without operations, there is no business.

However, it takes more than 6 months to get operations experience, which is on average how long a Creative type person will stay with one business.

2. More Hirable

The first thing a recruiter looks for on a candidate’s resume is EXPERIENCE.  Not just any kind of experience…operations experience.  Can the person they are interviewing do what they say they can do.  And more importantly…Have they done what they say they can do?  If so…they are hireable

If not…BAM..in the can it goes.

An understanding of the business world is key no matter what industry a creative find they are in.   From architecture to entertainment, from graphic design to music, learning the basics of business operations will help you gain an edge and be successful in communicating about how your work drives business.

If you are a creative and want to be more valuable to the business world…work for a company for more than 5 years…learn its operations.  Your value will go up 500%.

Let me know how I can help.
