In a recent INC.COM article, Tom Hanks talks about connecting with people isn’t about selling them something.
Naturally, marketing is related to selling someone something. However, there is a need for businesses and brands to get to know who it is they are selling before selling them something.
Tom Hanks always does a great job when he gets in front of a camera. Why? Because, even though he ultimately is marketing something…himself, a movie or a product… he does it telling stories that reach the ‘person’ in the audience…not just the audience.
Storytelling Rules
This is where having a story to tell someone about your business works towards gaining a person’s trust and telling the story using video touches a person better than any media.
If you are not using video to tell your story you are not gaining the maximum out of your marketing.
Jeff McKissick, during his endorsement video for SyncLab Media Video Marketing Services, does a good job with storytelling during his presentations.
Storytelling is a centerpiece to Jeff’s video marketing strategy.
Steps Towards Connecting With THE Person First
- Connect with the people in your audience early.
- Start your story with a hook – a question or problem that needs resolution.
- Make the person you are talking to the protagonist, not your product.
- Connect with emotional impact.
Know the Person First Before Doing Business With Them
Years ago I was a lot more active with my Mr. Business Golf brand.
I still use all of what I learned during my time out talking to people about the virtues hidden in the game of golf that business people need to use. The main virtue being able to connect with the person you are wanting to do business with before you do business with them…all during a round of Business Golf.
During that 15 year span of talking to people in large groups, small groups and a whole lot of one on ones I developed storylines from each of them. Those stories I have from 40 years of being in business are what I use nearly every day to touch the person first before I market to them.
There is a lot of merit in using storytelling as a marketing tool. I recommend you use it.
Let me know how I can help.
