How To Tell Someone They Shouldn’t Be Speaking in Public?

January 19, 2020 By Scot Duke

I would be safe in saying that over the past 45 years I have been in the business world I have heard a few hundred people get up in front of a group to give a speech.

With that said, I also would be safe in saying that well over 85% of those I have heard give a speech probably shouldn’t.

This brings up the question I am asked…how do you tell someone that their voice is awful for speaking without they deeming you a crank or worse?

The answer: You can’t!

But, Someone Needs to Tell Them the Truth

There are a lot of people who use social media to promote their business by giving lectures or speeches.  Most of these people do a pretty good job and most all have a very good story to tell.  However, there are a few who just need to stop.

There are a number of reasons why public speakers need to quit speaking in public and each annoyed listener in the audience has their list of reasons.  However, the one reason everyone can agree is the most annoying are with the speakers who are straining their voice or sounds like they are hurting.

There are not that many of the strained voice speakers out there and, of course, it is an admirable effort they make trying to speak in public, but if they continue to speak in public it really does not help their image.

I know of a few of these speakers with annoying voices who have rallied the support of a few people to tell them their speaking abilities are grand.   It is these speakers who REALLY need to stop before their image becomes so toxic that no other public speakers would want to be on the same stage with them.

Maybe The Should Just Blog

Yes, I realize those public speakers who have oratory issues with they are really squeaky or raspy voices and are turning their real audience off are probably not going to read this blog.

However, may you will can tell these people that maybe they should just write their speeches into a blog.  We can’t hear the strained voice in a blog.

Other than that..let me know how I can help?
