Old School Audio Blogging or New School Video Podcasting

May 30, 2019 By Scot Duke

There is no argument on the tremendous popularity towards podcasting has today. Nor, is there any disagreement with the need for marketers to do more than post content.

Do What Consumer Want

Podcasting has been around since the 1980’s when it was called Audio Blogging.  The term Podcasting came about in 2004 with Apple’s launch of the iPod.

Audio blogging was great until 2011 when YouTube launched which opened the door for everyone to use videos.  Since then the popularity in the video has steadily grown to a level so great that consumers and podcasting listeners would rather watch a video than listen to audio-only podcasts.

Videos Are A Must

So why are there so many people just now finding the need to Podcast and why aren’t more videoing their podcast?

First, there are these misconceptions about using video. Videos are too expensive…I don’t feel comfortable in front of the camera…Videos require too much know-how.

All of these excuses are what I hear from people defending their decision to Podcast and not video podcast.

Podcasting Covers the Basics

Don’t get me wrong..I am not saying you should NOT Podcast.  Actually, if you are doing any kind of marketing of anything you should be Podcasting.

Video Tells it All

What am saying, or asking, is why not produce a video podcast?

Granted, if you try to do the Video Podcasting yourself you are going to spend a lot of money and waste a lot of your time doing things wrong and getting very frustrated.  Whereas if you hired a professional video-centric digital marketing agency to produce the video podcasting the expenses and efforts are spread over a broader base of service you need to succeed.

In other words…you get more bang for your buck when you video podcast.

Let’s take a deeper dive into why Video Podcasting is a better way to spend your time and money.

Self Produced Podcast    Video Podcasting produced in studio by a professional
How much time does it take to produce a 30-minute Podcast vs a Video Podcast?   You will send at least an hour setting up the equipment, testing the equipment, thinking of what you are going to say, and then record the podcast.  After that, you may spend several hours editing and adding music base and anything intro or exits.  Could take up to 3 hours to produce a 30-minute Podcast.   Video Podcasting takes an average of an hour of your time to produce a 30-minute video podcast.  After that, the video-centric digital marketing experts take over taking care of everything else leaving you free to do your business instead of theirs.
How much time does it take to place the Podcast on the Hosting platform vs the Video Podcast being placed on a video platform?   Depending on hosting platform could take an average of 30 minutes each time you post a Podcast.  Could take more if you take the time to also review your profile, stats and other things needing your attention to maintain.   You spend no time with either placing the audio version of your Video Podcast onto you Podcasting Hosting platform or your Video Podcast on YouTube, Facebook, LinkedIn..etc…  The video-centric digital marketing service you employed to produce the video should be able to take care of that process as part of the Video Podcasting service.
How much time will you send on marketing your Podcast vs the Video Podcasting marketing?   To get your message out about your Podcast to all of the social networks you could spend hours.  Putting your message out to the wrong social networks would be a waste of time and possibly hurt your efforts.   Marketing the Video Podcast would be another service the video-centric digital marketing service should offer as part of the video podcasting subscription or as an add-on.  Either way, the value is in the experience the marketing agency has in knowing where and when to market the video podcast along with the podcast that is produced from the audio file.  So, again, no time spent on your part marketing…unless you want to.
How much investment would you need to make to produce a Podcast vs producing a video podcast yourself?   To produce a Podcast correctly you need to think of producing quality audio.  Nothing worse than for a listener having to wade through static or background noise to hear what the presenter is saying.  On average high-quality microphones, mixers, pre-amps, software, and soundproofing, plus all of the needed accessories, would cost, on average, $1500 to $2000 for a one-person podcasting set-up.  For a larger, more preferred, set-up the do-it-yourself cost could go as much as $5000 to $10,000.  In many cases, the equipment would need to be replaced every 3 or four years depending on how much it is used and the manufacturer’s support of that product.

The cost of the equipment needed to produce a Video Podcast in an environment acceptable to consumer’s interest (meaning in a controlled outdoor environment or studio) would cost upwards to $15000 to the sky is the limit.

The cost for a simple Video Podcasting produced by a video-centric digital marketing agency would be far less than the equipment cost.  The pricing usually is based on a series of video podcast being contracted by the number of video podcasts produced a month over at least 6 months.  That price of service from a professional video-centric digital marketing video podcast per month would range from $600 to $700 per month.

Greater savings would be experienced if more video podcasts are produced at once and over a longer term.

The thing to keep in mind is:

  1. The video is recorded and if produced correctly can be re-edited for marketing material or for event promotion.
  2. The audio from the video can be placed on a Podcasting platform which would amply all marketing of the overall Video Marketing.

This would make the overall value of the investment made in the Video Podcasting less than the initial and ongoing investment made for an Audio-Only podcast.

BOTTOMLINE:   You spend a lot of money and valuable time Podcasting.

Your money and time are much better spent letting professionals do the heavy lifting and you reap all of the benefits from providing your consumer..listeners…what they want..a clean, professional, image.

So, as you can see, the smart money is in hiring a professional to cover your digital media needs like Podcasting and Video Podcasting.  Don’t mess with messy up your image or brand by doing something you do not have the experience doing.  Producing digital media like podcasting and video podcasting yourself is like performing surgery on yourself.
