Has Facebook Lost Its Value? Are would the question be better stated by asking… What Is Facebook’s Value?
Facebook has had little value for me for some time now. The only value it had for me was it was a place to go and carry on a conversation with anyone who wanted to have a conversation.
Now, unless you are one of the chosen FEW, your message you posted is only going to be seen by 10% of the people you have designated as being a Friend. According to several studies I have done through emailing and/or calling friends to confirm they saw my Facebook post, only 1% of my Friends who I talked to say they saw my post.
Yes, if you have a trillion friends, only 10% coverage would be a great market.
The argument that usually starts over Facebook’s value as a social network is most people feel their message or content is being seen by far more than 10%. In the only study, I have found that was done without Facebook’s support, they showed 38% of Friends ‘receive’ the content you posted.
But if you are like most of us you only have on average 338 Friends? Doesn’t seem worth the effort knowing that only less than 40 of the 338 people you know on Facebook are getting your post.
That is like standing in a room of 50 people and only 5 people heard what you have to say…the other 45 never knew you were in the room.
What value is that to anyone.
OH, I know that Facebook has hired a bunch of people to get you to send out a message to your Friends asking those who read your post to respond they have so Facebook can open your window to maybe 10% of your Friends getting your message, but again…isn’t that a lot of work to do and you still do not know who is seeing your message. Plus, those FB post asking you to respond to be kept on their list of Friends who get their posts sounds a little…or a lot…like a desperate act to artificially build up you following of friends. Again, isn’t that a lot of work you are doing for Facebook and getting nothing in return.
The question then becomes, why are you still on Facebook? Saying you are there to keep up with family and friends has now been proven not true since you don’t know which of your family or Friends is seeing your post. Plus, you now know that you are only seeing 1% of your Family’s posts. So..WHY!!!???
I’d say it might be time for all who read this and are in love with Facebook..for whatever reason… pack up your family and friends and move to a social network that can be trusted and is not out to make millions of dollars off the content that you post to their database.
Just do it…I did and now have a robust following on Twitter for Family and LinkedIn for my associates…or both. Unfortunately, I still have people I know still thinking Facebook is a cool place to be. the cool factor left a few years ago when Facebook became a publicly owned company whose stockholders are demanding they create more data on you they can sell.
Stop the insanity…join a 12 step support group if you have to…just get off Facebook before they start charging you by the word to post on their platform..or some other unbelievable form of monetization their stockholders will demand them to do to produce their ROI.
Let me know how I can help.
