What would Social Media look like Without Hashtags?
Answer: It Would look awesome
This has to be the most profound, yet simplest, blog I have ever written.
Especially on the subject of Social Media and Hashtags. All I really need to tell you is to quit using Hashtags, but since I know you probably will not stop…
Why do people use Hashtags?
Every since Hashtags hit the scene the question has been…why do I need to use Hashtags? The answer has always been..you don’t have to use Hashtags but if you want to appear to be an expert in Social Media then you better use them…and oh yeah…the more you use the Cooler you will look to others.
I know me saying people are using too many Hashtags is hurting their feelings. But, they need to know a few things about Hashtags they probably know about but, like a drug, are hooked on using them thinking that not using them would make them appear they don’t know what they are talking about.
Yes, there is a little tone of a Rant here, but come on! You can’t say you are not a little annoyed with the uncertified social media consultant guru Jedi Knight ninjas social mediaist using sometimes dozens of Hashtags everywhere.
Spam Targets
So, do these experts know that Hashtags are targets for Spammers? Yes, the people who want to get their worthy products in front of the people using #BlueEyes or for that matter any combination of letters with a ‘#’ in front of it, are sought after by Spammers to use in hopes someone searches that HashTag and their posts is put in front of them.
Tags Are Better
Do they know Keyword Tags hold more Google power than a Hashtag? They problem do but say to themselves each time they use a Hashtag…“Dang, how cool do I look using a Hashtag.”
Keywords Rule
Do the experts in Social Media who post Hashtags know the power of Keywords has on search engines and how just keying in a powerful keyword will work the same as a HashTag? According to TwinWord.com, When you break it down to the most simple element all a hashtag really is, is a keyword with a ‘pound’ sign
Hashtags Are Embarrassing
I have confronted some of the social media associates I know who use Hashtags a lot…I mean A LOT..like a minimum of 10 Hashtags on their Twitter posts. The number of Hashtags they use is equivalent of pouring an entire bottle of syrup on a small stack of pancakes. Just flat out embarrassing.
Lost In The Crowd
Then there are the many…say dozens…of my close friends on Twitter and Google+ who only use Hashtags to aggravate people…like me. Many will use Hashtags to draw even more attention to the political issue they want people to see….or their cat video. As a result, I mute their feed and eventually will unfriend them.
Stop The Madness
When I finally get one of these Hashtaggers to talk about their addiction I ask them ‘what is it going to take for them to not use Hashtags?’. Most of them will say they will always use them because it reflects their personality…as sick as that might be, they are telling the truth.
A few will talk sense and admit that once someone of influence in the SEO world condemns the use of HashTags they will slowly stop.
What makes this all so sad is none of the people I know who use Hashtags EVER search by the Hashtag so I am at a loss why they use them.
Hashtags when they came out where a great way to sort posts so someone could see all that was posted for that Hashtags.
Now, Hashtags have become a game. A game that really has no purpose and is starting to work against the people who seem to still think Hashtags have some value.
The time has come for people who use Hashtags to take a look at themselves and how they come across to others when they post dozens of incomprehensive combinations of letters with a ‘#’ in front of it. Is that how they want others to see them?
I surely hope not.
Let me know how I can help.
