Let’s face it, if you are going to be using any of the Social Networks you at some point are going to deal with Trolls. One thing is for certain..You can’t win an argument with a Troll..so don’t try.
You will have to face the reality there really is no way to stay clear of trolls. Sometimes a person who is a perfect citizen of the Internet will turn into a Troll for a day. So be careful to not take action on a person who may have had a bad day.
So what is a Troll?
So what do you do with a Troll when you run into one. Here are 3 Ways to Deal With a Troll.
Avoid Where Trolls Reside
The best way to deal with Trolls is to avoid their breeding grounds like Facebook and Twitter. Since these social networks get the most mainstream media attention they are going to draw in more of the people, places and things that enjoy disruption.
I have found Google+ has a much better control over them since when you Report someone who seems to not understand social networking they painstakingly review the Report and will block the troll from being an annoyance to others. If they attempt to hack around the block..well..I understand Google has a fleet of engineers who make their existence on the internet a nightmare.
Block Them
Hitting Block button provides some satisfaction but realize that most Trolls are experts at setting up multiple personal profiles and come back at you from another account. This is the tough part of attempting to control Trolls so pick the social network with the least number of trools.
Ignore Them
Most of the time if you ignore Trolls they will go away. Trolls feed on attention so any response to them adds more calories to their diet of vile. However, many times ignoring a troll will inflame their hemorrhoids so exact a few of them to keep on and on.
Many times trolls will attach others in your comment stream to get back at you not paying any attention. This would be the exact time to hit the Block/Report button and delete their remarks from you posts.
Overall, you just need to keep your wits and emotions in check. Trolls love getting under your skin so I suggest when you encounter a Troll…take a deep breath, think about something else more pleasant and move on. If the Troll really out of line…well…you now know what to do.
Keep on keeping on and let me know how I can help.
