Many businesses and social media influencers have no clue they are running off their viewers with the methods they use to deliver their content. Actually, in most cases the methods they use are pissing off their followers so much they will not return.
A large number of people who use the internet as their way of expressing themselves have adopted…what they think or have been told are… popular forms of communication. They have an impression their method of posting content is accepted by their viewers and delivers their message in an entertaining way. Unfortunately, what they are doing is actually pissing their viewers off. As a result their viewers leave, unfriend them or block their posts.
In an effort to help you avoid creating a negative impression, let’s take a look at 5 of the things pissing of your viewers.
Off Balanced Remarks
Staying away from political or religious ridicule still rings true as the best policy to follow.
There is nothing wrong with taking a side to an issue or having a passion towards something you believe in. What is wrong is for a business person, especially a start-up, to take to the internet in an effort to market their product or service amongst a long trail of off balance negative rants. Nothing will run consumers off quicker and permanently than an angry rant.
It is best to stay completely away from anything controversial.
If It Moves It’s Dead
Animated .gifs have been around for a few years now. In the beginning they were a novel form of entertainment. However, the volume of none stop looping clips of video or graphics have lost their novel status and now have become a nuisance similar to SPAM. Studies are pouring in that .gifs posted in the Google+ social stream are resulting in:
- 85% immediately muting the .gif post
- 10% Uncircling the person immediately
- 5% scrolling pass the .gif post.
No Response
Not responding to comments or direct messages have now started to annoy more people. So much so they are blocking and uncircling the business. Many businesses have lost touch with what is going on in the social spaces. They still use the One-Way street style of social media and feel responding to ideal comments as a complete waste of time.
As a result, the brand’s image is not accepted and the lack of online support forces the company to go through a very expensive rebranding or forced out of business. Simple solution for businesses would be to hire a community manager that monitors full time all of the social space and proactively engage in conversations with people in their space.
Hashtag City
Ever since Hashtags have come out there has been a huge unanswered question of WHY? Now over 50% of posts made have more than five hashtags posted in the social stream. One hashtag would be enough. However, now that Google indexes all of the content to the search engine a keyword search would give the user the same result as if they clicked on the Hashtag.
Nonetheless, consumers are shying away from social media that use any Hashtags. The message this pull back from consumers shows the cuteness for the smart-aleck phrases people use for hashtags will result in the viewer uncircling or unfollowing the ‘tagger’.
What’s In It For Me
Ever since the internet started there were those who felt all the internet was to them was a place to post some sort of self promotion. That morphed into posting quotes for today, or some other supposed motivational image, intended to get the viewer emotionally invested enough to find out more about the person who posted the message. The self promotion without interaction with their following is resulting in them getting unfollowed.
These people, places and things have no interest in using the internet or social spaces for what they were intended to be used for…engaging in interactions. No, they are only into getting what they can out of something that will lead them to making money.
Consumers are now very social savvy online and they still control the destiny of the powerhouse social networks. Hopefully the leaders of these social platforms will see in order to keep the cash flowing they need to clean up what consumers find offensive…or an insult to their intelligence. Online social networking is now a way of life for many. The consumer has control..so it would be wise if you don’t piss them off.
