It would seem to me if you are going to spend a boat load of stockholder’s money to have a conference in one of the most expensive places in the world it would be a good idea to make sure all of your products and services are talked about… or at least mention them more than a passing remark.
That didn’t seem to happen at this year’s Google I/O conference. Sure, it is Google’s prerogative to place on their agenda for their developer conference whatever they want to talk about. However, leaving off their agenda the opportunity to talk about, or give clear direction on where one of their more popular products is going, sends out a negative message to the entire world.
At the very least the lack of mention of Google+ during Google’s premiere conference tells everyone they have little interest in developing what they should know would dominate the social network arena.
Even the Google I/O G+ Community was asking what was up with not mentioning Google+
Who Was Watching
For sometime now, small to large businesses have been searching for ways to get off the Facebook and Twitter train to nowhere. Google+ has been of interest to millions of businesses as a possible destination for the billions of dollar associated with marketing campaigns . However, the lack of media or clear communication from Google on if they are going to stay the course with Google+ gives businesses executives the impression Google is not serious about Google+.
From the quick round robin I made this afternoon to the business executives, marketing directors and small business owners I know personally, I found all of them had someone watching and listening to every word said during the Google I/O in hopes to hear what Google is going to do with Google+. The little information they got out of the time spend resulted in even more of a push back on having any interest in using Google+ to replace their other failed efforts in Social Media.
So why is Google avoiding discussing Google+?
Thinking Positively
There must be a reason for Google not giving five minutes during their I/O Conference to talk about Google Plus. Could it be they are going to have a separate conference that focuses on the benefits Google+ has for businesses? One can only wish!!! Could it be they are going to spin Google+ off to be rebranded to stand on it’s own like YouTube? That would be awesome!!!!
We will again have to wait an see what happens. Meanwhile, more and more businesses, as well as users, get turned off to G+ because it does not get any love from the media.
No Marketing
What is clear is Google is not a marketing agency. It is a Data Marketer. One can only wonder what would happen if Google would invest in itself and put their resources towards developing a long term marketing campaign for Google+.
Right now all we get is a token TV commercial during the super bowl or some other broadcast media that only touches a small portion of their user market.
One can only wonder what would happen if Google was to do like Facebook and Twitter and putting a large army of Google employees on the ground pitching the true value Google+ has for all businesses that Facebook or Twitter cannot touch.
Hopefully, we will not have to wait another year to find out what Google is thinking. Right now it doesn’t appear they are thinking.
Let me know how I can help.
