Google Plus: Sharing Circles Could Back Fire

February 25, 2015 By Scot Duke

G CircleEvery Google+ training class I conduct I always have several people ask why so many of the people they place in their Circles are so interested in sharing a circle they have created?

  • Who is in that Circle that is so important?
  • Do the people in the Shared Circle add back those who Share them to their Circle?
  • Why would I want to be in one of the Shared Circles?
  • Why are there so many people Sharing Circles?

…and the questions on Shared Circles just go on and on.  All of which verify the exact same reactions well over 90% of the entire population of Google Plus have when they see these long elaborate sales pitches attempting to get people to ADD the enclosed Shared Circle and then requesting they Share it with others.

Age Old Problem with Google+

I have written about this before.   What these people, places and things are attempting to do is increase the number of people who put them in their Circle.  That was the purpose of Google offering the ability to Share Circles.  However, from my sources in Google, Shared Circles were never conceived to be monetized as is perceived many of these people, places and things are actually doing.

Fortunately, the method of sharing circles to the public stream has proven to not be an effective way of Sharing Circles.  Plus, my two year study shows that over 90% of the Circles are filled with people, places or things who are only after the opportunity to post unwanted promotional material in unsuspected Plusser’s streams.

Hassle to Uncircle

These people, places and things know that being uncirlced from someone’s circle is easy enough to do, but realize that more than 6o% of Plussers do not remove them which by not removing these people, places or things allows their promotional material be indexed on their profile page.  It is this high percentage of naive Plussers they enjoy feeding off of.

It is suspected that the more profile pages the promotional material can be posted in makes the content to appear to the Google Search worthy of being place in the top Search Results.  This makes it worth it to these businesses who obviously are not out to be social or interactive with the people who put them in their circles.

Preferred Method of Sharing Circles

Bottomline:  Don’t Add a Shared Circles from someone, place or thing you do not know.  The Circles being shared to the Public stream are designed to boost the number of people a person has in their Circle.  However, the public share of circles does not work nearly as well as the Circles Shared in Private.  Sharing Circles in private with people you have developed a relationship with is the preferred method and is accepted by more Plussers.  The problem with the Private method is it takes time to develop the relationships needed to be able to share a circle in private.  The Time factor is what most enterprising individuals do not want to spend.

Google Plus is by far the strongest and most rewarding of all of the social spaces.  This is why more businesses and enterprising individuals are attempting to find a way to get messages in front of the more savvy consumers who reside on Google+.  They are going to take the risk of doing what it takes to put out mass media to the users of Google+.

It appears Google has left it to the Plussers to fend for themselves now that they have allowed businesses to use personal profiles.  Just another long list of things Google has allowed into the Google+ arena without getting feedback from the REAL users…like me and you.

Keep your eyes open Plussers…and let me know how I can help.
