What Makes a difference on G+?

July 30, 2013 By Scot Duke

Many of the business people I talk to,  or who approach me in public,  about G+ seem to be stuck in the rut with feeling they have to be stiff collared with their activity on G+ in order to be taken seriously.

When I ask why they feel they need to have such a stuffy appearance online they site strategies they are using only a Fortune 100 Brand would be able to pull off.

Of course they will make remarks like.. I feel like my company is am making headway with presence G+…or we have been out on G+ long enough we know what we are doing … but then…after I check their G+ presence I notice real quick they are sucking air drastically.

Why?

They don’t know how to be social.  They don’t let their hair down from time to time and show their viewers who they are, what they do..or that their business is approachable.

They want to keep posting ONLY mundane posts with links to their business site or an article on something dying like SEO or other irrelevant tech trade jargon.

Many of the business people I sit with and go through their G+ account with have spent a lot of time…or in reality a very short time…attempting to be something..or someone..they are not..or should not attempt to be.

Many have businesses Google is making obsolete in a short time and are working hard pounding their G+ community with information the consumers just do not want to hear about anymore.

All of them are usually following the advice from someone who is in the same boat with them and is only after making as much money consulting them as they can before Google changes and they have to change again.

Got to Change Your Mindset

So what should business people who are thinking they are being social on G+, but or not, do to make a difference on G+?

First they need to change their thinking.  They need to maybe even stop what they are doing for awhile and revaluate their business plan.  If after they revisit their purpose they still feel their presence on Google+ needs to be the same as the fortune 100 brands, then maybe Google+ might not be the place they should be.

Get After It

However, if they go back and realize their small business is never going to be a big brand, purely because they are in a dying industry, then the first thing they need to do is post a few humorous jokes, get on a hangout with their golf buddies, reach out to a community of Chevy Hot Rods, and event better…get some help from someone who is Google Verified and knows where Google+ is going.

They have to show the viewers..who are potential consumers..they are human.  The big brands are Big Brands because they made their reputation from the old school traditional methods.  Many old school small businesses..especially those in the dying internet marketing industries…are just not going to get there mimicking the big dogs online.

It’s a tough world out here in La-La-Land and Google+ can be one of the toughest social platforms to understand.  Especially,  if you become very desperate to hang on to a business model destine to fail and attempts to use G+ for something you never will be capable of upholding.

Work towards Being Found

It has become very clear to me, and the people I have guided through the change of thinking they need on Google+,  that no matter who you are, what business you do or your attitude towards business marketing..it is All About Being Social on Google+.

If you or your small business is here to be found on the search engine you will eventually have to show your consumer who you are, what you do and what it is you offer them..and that will have to be done Socially!

Let me know how I can help.
