There are many many many..I could go on and on… business people who are quickly finding their niche service is not providing everything their clients need. This is why someone who specializes in a service or provides a special interest should look to join a team of related professionals who together offers the complete package of services.
Here are several real life incidents providing an analogy of what I am talking about.
Grass Root Services
A neighbor had a few spots in his lawn from where a large tree use to stand and felt he needed to sod the area of what was formerly under the tree. He contacted a number of landscape and grass companies to come out to give him a bid. He contacted a total of 12 businesses. 4 of them felt the job was far too small and the other 8 said they would stop by within the week to give him estimates.
Over a ten day period only 4 of the business showed up. A follow up to the other 4 businesses resulted in all expressing that my neighbor’s location from their business was not in their 15 mile service area. Out of the 4 businesses that provided bids all four only specialized in either a particular grass, which my neighbor did not want, or offered the grass and laying the sod but did not prepare the ground for the sodding, or only provided the grass..no laying or preparing offered.
When my neighbor asked them why they did not provide a full service or if they knew of anyone they would refer to supply the service the business representative explained they moved their business to offer a more specialized service in an effort to make their business more profitable and/or they did not refer anyone who would supply the services needed to finish the project because they did not have anyone they knew who offered that kind of service.
Solo Businesses Loneliness
In another recent incident a client was explaining why he was late to our meeting saying he was caught up in another meeting with a business coach who was offering him assistance in his business’ digital strategy. He explained that the business coach had determined that he needed a complete overhaul of his internet presence. When he asked his coach who to go to for providing this strategy the response was..‘Oh, I am sure you can find someone.’
Build a Team
Have businesses gone too far with the Niche Business thing? Has the push to be different overridden commonsense? Obviously, there is some logic in businesses focusing on the details of their services in an effort to offer a quality product, but has this move to specialize gone too far?
All kinds of questions are being asked about the worthiness of offering niche service/products. Consumers who are looking for these services are starting to look for full service businesses..or businesses who work with a team of services.
I see the formation of Business Groups coming back. Businesses are going to have to start offering more than a niche service or product to satisfy today’s consumers needs.
