Depending on your online social strategy determines if you should be connecting with more local contacts or if you should be out attracting the entire world. Here is how to determine what works best for your online presence.
If you are providing a service restricted to being only offered in a small location locally then it does not make sense to connect with people on the other side of the earth. The vast majority of business people only need to think about how what they offer professionally impacts the contacts they have made. If what they offer can only be effective in a local region then connecting with people outside that region would not benefit the business or the people outside that region.
The same thinking goes for services or businesses offering a global product. Their digital footprint needs to cover a larger area instead of just a local region. A global business would never realize its full potential if it just markets to a dot on the map.
Everyone’s social base should be focused to their specific needs. To exceed those boundaries or to be hemmed into a too small region does not help you or the connections made. What happens with your content to those outside the region will either be seen as spam or near worthless. Where as for someone with a global offering would not be meeting their potential.
Many people who are out in the social spaces need to rethink their mission, purpose or reason for being online. Rethinking where their Social Network Base is could improve on their acceptance online. Targeting the right markets also helps improve on successfulness.
