Many companies today are dealing with challenges that are sometimes byproducts of the bad economy. However, some of the challenges facing each business owner or executive everyday are brought on themselves. Disgruntlement amongst a business’ workforce is usually generated directly from the business’ owners or executives bad decisions. For companies depending on their workforce to survive the down turn in economy their first concern should be the morale of their employees.
There are a number of reasons why employees become disgruntle with their employer. Poor Management usually leads the list of grievances employees have for their bosses. In a blog written a few years ago, Kathryn E. Darden of Associate Content from Yahoo, wrote on the different Poor Management Types. In her blog she listed the Bully, Micro-Manager, Nepotist, Sleaze, Harasser, Idiot and the Petty Sneak. All of these types are still very much alive and causing productivity issues amongst the few employees business have kept working.
Disgruntlement in the workforce is caused by many factors. Low wages, discrimination, and fear of downsizing or layoffs lead the most popular reasons today for low morale amongst employees. One of the newer causes of disgruntlement amongst employees and staff of golf facilities is their ownership or management lacking interest and/or knowledge in modernizing.
Many employees I am talking to state the lack of new technology in the workplace as the cause of their low morale. Many employees are having to do job of three people. Not having the tools to do their job faster is the reason for their dissatisfaction in where they work. As a result their productivity drops causing them to be reprimanded for low performance.
Modernization of golf facilities also is high on the list of reasons employees and staff are disgruntled. Many I talk to remark on the constant plumbing and electrical problems of their aging facility causes them to feel the upscale image they are asked to uphold cannot be done. Lack of pride in where you work and knowing there is no complete improvements in any long term plan takes its toll in employee’s attitude. Add to this the customers or members of a club constant belittling employees for the facility’s dilapidation and the staff starts asking themselves..why am I working here?
Employee disgruntlement sometimes is unavoidable but on the most part can be lessened with good management skills. Encouraging creativity and getting employees completely involved in problem solving..yes, even in helping in finding the revenue needed to rebuild a clubhouse…will improve the morale and stop disgruntlement.
Of course, getting help from the outside to consult a business on what direction to take to reach a goal goes a long way towards improving the overall morale..including the owners. I find it very interesting how many golf facilities do not seek help or a review of their business plan in an effort to find solutions to their business woes. The help is out there..all they need to do is reach out.

Thumbs up on this post Scot. I know it’s a topic not many cover — and it happens everywhere. I’ve heard these kinds of complaints. Seems like so many course owners/managers are stuck in a mindset that they can still afford to ignore change. *buzzer rings* WRONG!

Marci,
Thanks for your support. Yes, there seems to be a disconnect with how many owners/managers want their club’s to improve and how they are actually losing ground. I would love to report that the industry is changing, but just not hearing or see that many are facing today’s challenges well.
