There Really Needs to be a Social Media User Manual

December 28, 2010 By Scot Duke

HEAD You have seen it a million times on Twitter, Facebook and even on LinkedIn, where someone starts off with building trust with someone through a seemingly normal conversation only to kill it with constantly Selling something or posting links, avoiding conversation at all cost.

It is really getting out of hand. In the cases I have seen recently it is clear desperation generated by a failed economy has set in with many people out here in La-La-Land. Needless to say it is unfortunate the current events are putting a lot of people in a bind and pushing the most urgent of people to panic, but enough is enough.

Settle down people. If what you are doing or selling for a living is of interest to the online or offline markets it will be found by the consumers through effective social media. I think there needs to be a Social Media Manual developed.

I reviewed David’s blog on MediaPost.com on How PR People are Killing Twitter. I think his post today on To the People Killing Twitter was a much closer depiction of what many people all over the internet are doing on the social networks thinking they are marketing their product or brand. What this lunacy really is doing is pissing people off.

One of the fundamentals on Social Media is to get people to want to know what you do for a living instead of you assume they want to know. This is done through effective and clear communications focused towards learning more about someone than telling others about yourself. The goal is to get others to like you for who you are, not what you want them to think you are.

Social Media has a very logical process that is really easy to grasp.   These basic principles of personable communications makes effective social media practices which is a perfect tool to generating business. If you are not a person who feels socializing to business connections and feel strongly you have to be selling every moment you are awake then maybe a Shopping Cart site might suit your needs better instead of a social networking site.
