Twitter or Facebook or LinkedIn?

October 26, 2010 By Scot Duke

I am finding it very interesting..and very entertaining..to run into so many people who have dropped..or are in the process of dropping..their presence on Twitter.   Even more of interest is some of these people are the people who were addicted to Twitter from the beginning and were a HUGE influence in getting me ..kicking and screaming..on board Twitter when it launched.

There seems to be a growing number of REAL people disconnecting from many of the social networks out of frustration with the un-natural marketing businesses are attempting to use online.  Where these consumers will land is what many who know how to effectively use social media are asking.

Twitterville Becomes a Wasteland

Times and things have changed in La-La-Land and like everything in life, Twitter has changed, unfortunately, to the worse.  Yes, I know there are many out there who are still in love with Twitter for reasons that really baffle me.

Social networking is, and should be, part of every entrepreneurs’ life.  The question becomes..which social network works best for your interest.

In a now growing number of people, Twitter is not the place to be for social or business purposes.  Why?  They simply are not getting responses to their efforts.   Everyone should have some measure to what they do or are doing online.  What the majority of people who are using online social networking should be doing is building a community of people they can associate with professionally and socially.  The measure of accomplishing the goal should be made in the volume of responses to what is posted and not the number of people (places or things) following them which is Twitter’s main draw.

What Happened to Facebook?

Many people are moving over to (or back over to) Facebook. For some this is the equivalent of jumping from the frying pan into the fire as far getting away from the absurd volumes of unwanted advertisements posted.  It seems many Facebook patrons are out to score as many pages and friends as possible… ala. Twitter Follow/Following.  This mentality of quantity over quality seems to be perpetuated by the many, many PR people on Facebook working for businesses wanting penetration of a market immediately.  This failed method of marketing just will not go away.

As a result, much of the social networking on Facebook..which by the way is within the nucleus of social media, is voided due to the Facebook feed being cluttered with announcements of people becoming friends with dozens of people, places or things.  This action is really not social networking.

Will LinkedIn Hold Up?

The last bastion of sane social networking was LinkedIn. Unfortunately, LinkedIn also has adapted the Twitterville mode of operation.  However, there are still controls LinkedIn has kept in place to keep the high volumes of Spam posts in check.  There are still safeguards in not allowing someone you Do Not Know infiltrate into your connections.  The improvements of the LinkedIn Groups is admirable.

Still LinkedIn has its weakness as in the allowing a person sign up and then post a logo in their profile.  Allowing Twitter feeds to be posted sounded good, but in reality, it just allows the Linksters of Twitter another platform to clutter.

Now, more of the ‘Gamester’ of the world..people who like to creating allusions..are moving into LinkedIn.  What a shame, but it probably was expected.

Fortunately, LinkedIn is still where most of the true social networking begins for the majority of people who have a mission.  LinkedIn profiles show more of who the person is than the other social networking.  The more information that can be provided on a person’s professional interest and social interest the more trust can be built.  LinkedIn allows for those who still want that Twitter Fix the ability to Tweet away.

None of the social networks are perfect for everything.  You just have to pick the one that fits best.  Me…I am still looking.  Let me know how I can help.
