Over the past couple of years I have had the opportunity to put my experience to work through mentoring others who need the experience I have to offer. The challenge I and other people who really can help a person’s personal and professional approach to life is building the trust that I really can help. Many people needing help do not see the value of a mentor or business coaching. Those who do, move past the bumps in the information highway rather quickly and get a step up on their competition.
Naturally, I run into the people fresh out of college with all kinds of book smart degrees, but find themselves not understanding how to get what they learned into being productive in their new positions in the job world. That is just one of the areas where mentoring can ease the pain and in most cases give a jump start to their careers.
For those who do not understand how a mentor can help, here is a list:
- Focus on Skills You Want to Develop or Improve
- A mentor can help you learn a new skill or gain additional knowledge of your profession. Mentors can target one or two areas of weakness you need to develop.
- Work on Your Approach and Follow-Through
- Evaluates as an outside how you appear to the world and work towards developing weaknesses into strengths.
- Keep a focus on the goal and the plan to get there
- Someone to lean on when things don’t go well, or to share excitement with when things go well.
Every business person, young and old, needs a mentor from time to time. Some people keep a mentor around throughout their life, while others need them just to get them over a hump in their career. Either way, having someone with experience in how things works or resources to things out of reach is well worth the investment.
