Why Follow Friday is Not For Me

December 11, 2009 By Scot Duke

Whoever thought up the Follow Friday movement really had something going.  The initial concept was truly sincere and helpful.  However, the Spammers and Scammers are loving that person much more than most of us.

My Twitter Manifesto outlines all of my do’s and don’t of the way I use Twitter which all stemmed from the hours of time I was wasting (and in some cases still am) clearing out the people, places and things who Follow me that just do not get Twitter.  Thank goodness for the tools built to throttle back the noise of the main feed of Twitter so I can see who it is that is Hosing me and my Followers with stuff only an alien from Mars would want to see or read.

Fortunately there is a way to keep the Follow Friday love going.  My friend John Luster @johnluster started last week doing what is a much more productive way of telling people who would be good to follow on Twitter.  He wrote a blog and listed out a few of his peeps on his ‘A List’ of people he is Following.  This produces a much, much better impact to the FF concept of passing on to people solid leads on real people that would be good to follow.  It is much more effective than the Twitter Handles crammed into 140 characters.  Plus it brings more value to the person who took the time to blog on them than posting a tweet.

Yes, the effort to type 140 characters on Twitter is much less for the individual who is posting all the peeps to follow.  Unfortunately for those people who were listed on the #FF hashmark for Twitter have now got to wade through hundreds of notifications of who is following them they probably do not want them to be following.

So, cut down the insanity on Twitter and think about who it is you are telling the universe would be good to follow..you may not be doing them a favor…but thank you anyway.  Let me know how I can help.
