I Miss the SKINS Game

November 24, 2009 By Scot Duke

It is sad that one of the most exciting annual golf events ever is not being held this year.  The Skins Game, one of my very favorite golf events is not being played during its traditional Thanksgiving time frame.  Can this be a sign of more thing to come..like the Wendy’s Three Tour Challenge and other made for TV golf outings being taking out of the way so the sponsors of Football can get those viewers?

Has the interest in golf fallen that low that quality family entertainment featuring golfers Freddy Boom Boom Couples is not of no interest to golfers?  Can it be?

Fred Couples was the center piece of the Skins Game for many years.  There was no other who could make golf look Cool….no club throwing or F bombs..just a smooth as molasses back swing matched with an explosive forward swing and the swagger down the fairway that just oozed COOL…no other player like him.

Fred taking down all comers is hard to believe was not good for TV.  The Skins Game was an opportunity for non-golfers to see how REAL golf is played.  It gave everyone an opportunity to see how the professional golfers can really play when they are out from under the gun of sponsor endorsements and getting run over by the photographers and the circus of rabid fans that follow Tiger.

The Skins Game was a real show of golf skill and how to deal with pressure.  Not often do you get to see the best golfers in the world sweat out a putt for $500k.  Of course Freddy will remain the best and undisputed King of Skins.  He ate putts for $200k for breakfast…hitting a shot around a tree to nail the pin was made to look like a regular shot from Mr Couples.

Yes, I and probably millions of golf fans around the world are going to be staring at the boredom of other sports this weekend wishing the Skins game was being played.

Maybe someone should call up Fred and say their is a $500 Skins pot at Indian Wells and see if he would bring his friends out for us to watch them win it..I would be there..how about you?

Some of the best golf occurred at the skin's format during thanksgiving. This is not a good sign for the sport.
