Is the FedEx Cup Really Helping Golf?

September 28, 2009 By Scot Duke

Naturally, the humorous commercials and the great writing done for their advertisement is getting FedEx’s sponsorship budget a good ride.  But, what about GOLF?  Is Golf getting a positive image from what the golfing world is seeing played during this series of eliminations tournaments.

It is understood that the PGA Tour Professionals all are vying all year long for a position to play for the huge purse, but is that really helping GOLF as a whole.

How does the average golfer see the FedCup playoffs?  What makes these series of events so confusing is it starts off with a full field of players like a regular golf tournament, but in reality there are only going to be a few in the field have a realistic chance to win using the point system.

Sure, there are the long shot dark horse come from behind players who jump into the top five players, but does the confusion of why the players who scored lower and not get into that last game hurt the way golf is seen by the new to golf fan?

Yes, the FedCup race is a game within a game and like no other sport it has a sub plot that brews from within the event.  I still do not think that the concept of the point system to qualify into the series championship is providing what the PGA was hoping it would provide the golf world..which was excitement like other sports that have series of elimination play offs to determine the top player.  In the past two events the FedEx Cup was determined before the last putt was dropped..what is exciting about that?

It was a valiant effort for Phil Michelson to battle the field for the four days of the final playoff to win the event, but really blows golf fans minds that he only won the Championship and not the FedEx Cup.

That concept just really goes against what a golf tournament and golf is all about which in competitive golf the winner is who is the last man standing..instead of the winner being the last man standing and then move him out of the way for the guy who came in second who REALLY won the event..Huh?

I like the concept of the FedEx Cup but there has got to be a better way of determining who wins $10m.  Let me know how I can help.
