Out here in La-La-Land every blogger will run into a significant number of enterprising so called business people who really do not give a crap about anything online or anyone online and are only out here to rape and pledge for profit. There is no getting around it so if you are a blogger you need to get ready for this insult to all of our intelligences.
I really don’t dwell on this issue much anymore and am only mentioning it because there seems to be a tremendous increase in these individuals who use spamming and performing inappropriate feats in the comment sections of a blog as part of their business model.
So what is up with this increase and why are there so many angry Stupid business people running rabid around the internet?
A while ago I attending an informal gathering of business people. The affair was a social with a wide spread representation of all generations, cultures and industries. As I networked around the room I ran into a conversation about Twitter and Facebook. This group consisted of six men and women of different age groups. I was invited in to the conversation and after exchanging business cards with everyone I got the usually remark I get in every Twitter gathering…
OH yaw, you are that Mr Business Golf dude.
This is usually followed with ‘I think I follow you’ or ‘I use to follow you’..pretty standard procedure when it comes to walking into a Twitter conversation.
However, in this particular gathering the conversation was being lead by a young man, late 20’s early 30’s, who was lecturing the group on how Twitter can ONLY be used as a business tool if you process nothing but links to your product or business sites. Any other application of Twitter like responding to people or having a conversation is a complete waste of time and really defeats the purpose since most people on Twitter are losers.
Naturally the next words out of his mouth was… you have to have a minimum of 20k Followers to make your social media efforts on Twitter worthwhile. If you have less than 20k you really are a ‘Nobody’ and are wasting your time.
This statement started the stir of verbal reactions of…Oh, Really?!?..or.. I Heard that?!? That is except for me. I was quickly sorting through the business cards to find this fool’s name and business before I made my reaction to his statement which was my usual question… ‘so what business are you in?’.
This is where the conversation really lead to me writing this blog.
He had an Affiliate Site on the internet that sells anything and everything that anyone and everyone will let him sell..”and a few things some don’t know I am selling of theirs”..but he didn’t want to talk about that. Yep..A Direct Marketer with a quota to meet.
Now just to be perfectly clear..there are good Direct Marketers who quietly go about their business and let people come to them, and then there the bad direct marketers who hound the internet with all kinds of obnoxious advances into anything and everywhere they can put their link to their worthless sites in front of someone. This guy was one of the Bad ones who represented a large number of fools that seem to be coming on to the internet by the groves.
What is bringing them online is the failed economy. There are a lot of people who have lost their high paying salaried jobs who are grabbing anything that claims to make the same amount of funds as they were making. So more and more people are falling into the ‘work at home‘ schemes and taking the advice from their mentors on what they HAVE to do to generate that level of revenue. We all know the games and it is scary that there are that many people who are jumping on to do that level of business.
But back to my conversation with this misguided young man..
What came next made me smile. As I casually looked down into my JD and Water wishing I had a few more before here came the usual question I am asked about what I do professionally. However in this case the question came to me very brash ..
..and Who are You and Why do You Ask?
Well, my answer to this youngman’s blatant attempt to place himself one-up in the conversation was not what he expected because I calmly told him that I might be his worst enemy and was not a supporter of Black Hat social media he is saying works.
This remark caused the others in the group who know me from Twitter, and the two on my A List ,to snicker and smile broadly knowing my position of all this foolishness going on out here. They all glanced over to the young man to capture the expression on his face then back to me because they knew I am full capable of running a full carpet bombing sortie on this issue of insanity marketing.
My answer to the questions I was asked infuriated the young man who quickly turned to look around to gather support from some of the other in the room who feel Twitter is a legal Spammers’ paradise.
NO…there was no reenactment of the OK Corral with me playing Doc Holiday..but there was a parting of ways with him and his gathering thinking he won the battle by remarking as he left..
We could give a F*&k or a S*&t about the any rules people have about the way they use the internet..we our out to make money and if others on the internet are not using it like we are then they really are wasting their F*&king time.
That is pretty much the quote of his remark. What proceeded the display of unprofessionalism was a lot of chest thumping claims of how many hits they get to their sites which resulted in their advertisers getting large volumes of hits to their sites..and yada yada on how much money that was generating them.
At this point I really didn’t have to say much more and ended up just ordering another JD and Water and watched the show unfold. My Followers took turns asking this small group of misfits how much money they were making with this method of marketing on Twitter and are their advertisers making any money off the hits they are getting..and, then the knock down punch one of the growing group of supporters asked..
Can you show us validation that you are getting those hits and are they from REAL Live people?
Poof!..they were gone….
After that, I moved on to talk about more pleasant things like Golf and real business operations and practices and the Business Golf Country Club. But I did leave the gathering with a closing promise that I would be blogging about this incident..so here it is.
I am expecting some rather slanderous comments and outlandish statistics that can’t be validated..so stay tuned.
