I have been fielding a few questions this week from many of my fans here who read my blog.. Finding a Job thru Playing Business Golf
I find the unemployment rate appalling since I also know many large businesses are cutting their forces purely because it has become the acceptable thing to do in a recession. Nobody is going to question them on if they really needed to do the cut backs and the politicians are not going to raise an eyebrow since, in a way, most politicians feel these large businesses are their employer.
Unfortunately, it is happening and we just have to deal with it.
What needs to take place is smaller businesses and businesses set up on a ‘one man shop’ business model need to work towards revisiting their business model to find a way to hire someone. Yes, I know, small businesses are having a hard time as well making ends meet, but at least they have ends to meet. Plus, I am not saying that every business should be able to to hire someone. However, many businesses could solve more of their business problems if they found a way to hire someone to solve the problems that is keeping their business from growing.
There are a number of ways business people can go about hiring some of these unemployed experts. Every little bit helps and if you think long enough you probably could find something you do during your work day that could be passed on to someone else to do for you while you move on to work on something more important.
My friend, and fellow socialmedian, John Lusher, talks about how Virtual Assistants help business people deal with a workflow they are not able to spend the time to effectively complete or get out of the way so they can spend their time on more profitable ventures. This is just one way that other people are thinking of to help solve the problems businesses are struggling with today.
This feeling many businesses have towards thinking what they have to do each day for business cannot be done by anyone else is based on their assumption there is nobody else who can do it better than them. This is not so today.
Also, many business people have this fear of delegating anything. Some times these assumptions are correct and there are many things that probably should not be delegated. However, my ‘Too Many Years’ of operations management and process management experience tells me that over 90% of every business model has some tasks that are better done by someone else.
Just think about this..
The US Census reports..
About three quarters of all U.S. business firms have no payroll. Most are self-employed persons operating unincorporated businesses.
At the beginning of 2008 it was reported that there were over 20 million businesses who employed no one. I am sure that number fluxuates and may have gone up since more and more people who are amongst the recent layoffs are starting small businesses who employee no one.
Here is the kicker…. If only 50% of these businesses employed one person, either permanently, on contract or part-time, that would put 10 million people back at working for something instead for nothing. That should help more struggling business make it to the next level of profitability and put a few people back to work while they are searching for where they fit in the economy.
Something to think about …let me know how I can help.
