No Big Deal

June 18, 2009 By Scot Duke

paper_bag_head_275_thumb.jpgToday is one of those days where I have a terminal case of writers block.  I know there is a long list of issues people have asked me to discuss as well as my own list of things to tell you about.  However, with the US Open at Bethpage and the explosion of changes that are going to take place with the Business Golf Country Club in the next few days, I just am not set in my mind to what one thing I want to blog about.

So, I decided that this might be a good time and talk about a bunch of stuff that pops into my mind.  So lets begin..

Twitter

I know, if you here reading this you have heard about Twitter.  If not, then please take a photo of the rock you just came out from under and post it on Twitter for me, please..will ya?  I want to know where that rock is so I can get under there and away from hearing about Twitter.

Geez, what was started as an obscured little platform for micro-blogging in 140 characters is now…well, almost a joke.  Something like..how many Aggies does it take to twitter?..

At first I couldn’t figure out what it was for and after a few weeks of hammering people about it I finally ..almost three months later…met one of the ‘early adaptors’ of Twitter..meaning a person that was on Twitter from day one..mostly people on the left coast…who told me that Twitter was created for a click to use to communicate with and the app was mistakenly placed out in the open domain of the internet..yeah, right.  At least that is the only story I have been able to dig up that answered my initial question about Twitter which was…

What does Twitter do?

Now Twitter is turning to another MySpace..a wasteland of worthless communications from some very millions (none of which I am following)desperate people who are mostly out on the internet to get attention…too bad and sad..and just as the business world and mainstream normal people were coming online.  OH Well, this just means some other social/business networking app needs to be developed that stops all the crap and the crap makers at the door… Hummm..seems I have created something for the golf world that blocks out the crap..I can’t remember what that was..

Golf

Speaking of Golf..for the golfers of the world..and yes, I know, there are not many of you out here to read this..this week is a Major week for Men’s Golf…the US Open is being played in New York..  Yada, yada..since the entire blogsphere of golf is writing about the US Open I will not waste your time and move on to something I don’t blog about very often.

Internet Business Development

Are you getting tired of hearing this phrase?  Well, get use to it.  With more and more businesses coming online there will be a lot of newbies out here who have not learned the ropes yet and will drive catch phrases and brand names into the ground.  Many of this misguided newcomers to the internet have been told by someone who thinks they know the ropes what to do… and will FAIL miserably.

I am sure you have seen what I have seen where businesses are setting up their existence online with flashy Logo’s and catchy looking caricature to represent their image..all in the name of Branding.  Geez..give me a friggin break.  Can you trust that there is anyone behind that slick image you an trust to produce a quality produce or offer a service that is worthwhile.

There is nothing out here on the internet that is not generated initially by a Human Being..yes, I know that there are some computers programmed with artificial intelligence to mimic humans and go out to crate images of businesses for marketing purposes, but I am not to discussing Facebook yet. So, since the internet is allegedly full of real humans, then they are expecting to connect with another real human when they make contact..not an icon.

The new wave of mainstream businesses are coming online by the droves and they have one big flaw coming in the door…No Experience online.  So what do they need to do..geez..they throw a rock out a window in Silicon Valley and they could hit a flock of hacks who will help them get online..many might even have experience online.  However, what most of the marketing firms these business hire do not have practical experience in internet marketing or developing business online..other than the famous and scammy affiliate marketing schemes and other questionable business models that are still somehow out here on the internet.

So, until these business find out that a more personable approach has to be taken online to develop business..like a real person from the business connecting with a real person who is a consumer..then we will just be seeing more and more flashy logos and cartoons as avatars of what should be a person, not a business.

Mobile Communications

Now one of the highlights of the cybersphere is the onslaught of applications for mobile phones.  I will be jumping into that market soon..matter of fact REAL soon..and can assure you that mobile technology will probably be what replaces the internet…whoa..did I just sound like a marketing geek?..I guess I better watch that or Facebook might hire me to do marketing for them.

The next generation of geeks..which was just born ten minutes ago in cyberspace time..will develop mobile devices to use to gather information or keep in touch with others that will be almost an extension of the human body…well, maybe not that extreme, but the mobile device with be attached to the body some how.

I kinda look forward to it, but again am concerned that there is enough stress in the world and being tied to information 24/7 will not allow for any release of the stress that information can generate.  Again, new technology cannot and should not override human nature.  A person needs a break everyday.

SkyPe

Wow…what a marvelous work of technology.  I wish SkyPe had been around back when I was struggling with $ million travel budget. I am on SkyPe nearly everyday… Great tool and is what I see being on the leading edge of business technology..geez…I am starting to start sound like some of the geeks over on Techcrunch

iPhone

Anther term, phrase and word I am getting tired of seeing online…geez people, it is just a friggin phone…there will be another one produced that is better in ten minutes, so get on with it.  The iPhone craze..Here is a prime example of Internet Marketing on Steroids…don’t get me wrong..I would like to have one of those puppies, but not for the Skin they are charging for it.  But..it is the way of the future, the way of everything else out here in La-La-Land will probably go.

Get Back to Work

That is about all I have on my mind for this ten minute stretch.  I guess I need to get back to work of helping Golf Survive and doing what I can to help the golf economy get back on its feet.  Maybe I will do this again sometime….it has been fun and let me know how I can help.
