How Online Business Networking Hits the Bottomline

June 4, 2009 By Scot Duke

How many times have you heard your business associates say..

I don’t have time to play around online in a business networking group. I need to make Real Contacts.

…Then in a few days they turn around and say..

Man, I sure could use some New Business.  Got any suggestions where online I can find my market?

Many of you may not be hearing this as much as I do, but it is a fact…there are a lot of business people who just do not get how online business networking can benefit their bottomline.

OH, most of them know what Online Business Networking is but few take it serious.  Why?

If you ask someone who is a member of LinkedIn on why they are there they will say one of two things..

  1. I am there to connect with other people in the business world
  2. I was told I needed to set up my profile there..other than that, I never go there.

It is no surprise that business people say this, most of them do the same thing at offline networking, but again why?

What has taken place in the business networking arena, both online and offline, is the networking groups start filling up with people from the industries I call ‘Small Margins-High Volume’ sales.  These are the people who make such a small margin of profit in what they sell or provide that they have to hit very high volumes of people each day to make their quota.

Most all of these people are very aggressive and focused on themselves more than who they are talking to.  They have been around for many years and these are the people most business people who join networking groups, online and offline, run into.

On the most part these business people who are making the remarks on needing to find more business have run into these people in these groups and that is now their impression on the type of business people who populates these groups.  So, they don’t go back to the group or the site to network their business needs.

Fortunately, what is taking place now is more Niche groups are starting to form.  They are screening who is allowed in or not.  This is good and will help clean up the image that business networking in a group environment is a waste.

Business Networking is still a very viable way of finding new business.  In today’s economy trust is going to have to be established on both sides of the sales counter.  Meeting someone in person and finding out who they are is going to be the only way to survive.

Find a business networking group or club that works for you and dedicate some time to attending or being a part of building that community.  You will soon find that business will come to you.  Let me know how I can help.
