Who is a Business Golfer?

May 7, 2009 By Scot Duke

j0402346.jpgYou would think that it would be obvious the answer to this question.  However, when I step back and look at golf and business, I can see that their may be some question on who exactly is a business golfer.

If you look at golf from the top then you would say that Tiger Woods is a Business Golf..he is in the golf business and he plays golf for a living..true that would be a pure definition of a business golfer, but not all inclusive of who else is a business golfer.

When looking at golf from the bottom, or at the recreational or occasional golfer, then the guy who is standing behind the counter taking green fees or out on the driving range giving lessons is a business golfer.  Again, true, these guys and gals would be included in the definition of a business golfers.

Now when you look at the middle of the golf economy you find the guy who pays for a country club membership, holds a monthly business staff meeting at the club and all of his client meetings are held there which naturally all include a round of golf sometime during the process. You have the large businesses holding conferences at golf resorts.  Yes, these business people also are all business golfer.

However, there are more golfers out on the edge of scope of who also would be considered business golfers.  Like the ‘9 to 5’ers’ who reside in the sea of cubicles of large businesses…the forklift driving out in the warehouses of the world…the retail sales person who work in Mallville…and the list goes on of the golfers who could and should be considered Business Golfers.  And it is this group of business golfers who many businesses are totally neglecting as a viable resource to improving their company’s image and profitability.

So that is who is a business golfer.  Now what impact do they have on golf and business?

Just think for a moment if all of the businesses around the world would let all of their business golfers working for them to go out once or twice a month to play golf with a customer or vendor.  What would that one action do for business?

Well for one thing it would increase the golf facilities’ and golf industry’s revenue.  But more importantly it would put a happier face on businesses around the world if the business golfers who normally don’t get to play business golf are allowed to play business golf for their company.  This action would also bring a positive image of the company by the clients who were treated to a round of golf and provided an opportunity to visit with someone other than an account rep. All of this would move to increasing the bottom-line with repeat business sales.

The improvements a more energetic and enthusiastic business golfer would make to golf would be immense and would hold golf solid during this recession.

So,who is a business golfer..or should it be who is not a business golfer?  Let me know how I can help.
