The Look that Helps Golf

April 24, 2009 By Scot Duke

It is good to see golf still has business style.  In this recent article published online by Woody Hochswender ,a contributing writer for Golf.com, Woody on the image of golf in what the golf professional on the PGA wear.

The Course of Style: High Style on the QT

I for one am refreshed to see that the ‘Dress for Success’ look for professional golfers is taking hold in the younger PGA players.  Fashion is fashion, but dressing to reflect professionalism is still holding its own.  In the business golf arena of the amateur golfer world, that first impression is a must..a make or break situation in today’s ‘Who can I trust to do business with’ environment.

It has always been good to see players like Steve Striker sneaking by the best golfers of the world while looking like you or me..

Notable, Mr Hochswender also listed the rest of the crew of PGA Pros who are taking on a more success look and who you would not think would want to be part of it.  Players like…

Arron Oberholser, Troy Matteson, Charley Hoffman, Bill Haas, Marc Turnesa, Michael Letzig and Webb Simpson.

…part of the Young Guns of the PGA..or who I refer to has Tiger Hunters.

Speaking of Tiger, I will have to say, that Tiger Woods has held up his end of the deal with most of his line of golf fashion.

I am still wondering what he was thinking when he took to the Tee in the 2007 US Open with that skin tight shirt that looked to be designed by Earl Scheib.  Yes, Tiger is the most successful golfer in the Universe, but only Tiger could get away with wearing that number.

But not all golfers feel the ‘success’ look is how they want to look..I am not sure what the look is some of the amateur golfers I see who try to achieve the Sergio see-thru white pants he wears during the Pro-Ams.  Again, another look that only Sergio and crew could pull off.

The look, if you can call it that, that is resulting in businesses feeling their money spent delivering their message to the golfers who attend golf events is being wasted is the look that is a shade above the grunge look and just below the Sweat Suit Casual look.  I am sure if you were these businesses spending millions on marketing to the golfer marketing you too would be questions if it is being spent hitting the golfer market.

I realize that it should not matter how someone looks if golf is looking to increase its numbers, but does impact golf dearly if the image portrayed is reflects that they are not serious about how one looks.  How someone dresses is a reflection on how  they feel about their self.  The ‘Dress Down’ look just not belong on the golf course…

I guess the change starts with the business golfers and adopting the dress for success look to golf.  Hopefully that will provide another example to the general golfing public on how the impact of a person’s image effects they they appear to others which effects their bottomline.

Lets see if that will help turn things around.  At least it is a start to a HUGE problem.
