By now there is not a business or business person alive who has not heard of the term Social Media. That is unless you are one of those people Geico proclaims as being under a rock then social media probably is moot for you anyway. However, for the rest of us, Social Media is something that will have to be dealt with if a business is to be successful.
Still, I hear from business people everyday who tell me…”What is the big deal with Social Media?..I just don’t get it!”
Those who ‘don’t get’ social media are many and usually are the ones who are driving consumers off the internet with their insistence in using Old School styles of marketing. Those who invested heavily in using direct mailing and billboard style marketing offline usually are who do not get Social Media.
Why? Most don’t want to understand it due to it meaning they would have to invest time and resources into another form of marketing that has no form of measurements. The rest are not going to change to anything new since they have millions invested into the old school way of doing things.
Posting sterile remarks about a product along with a link to the web-site just will not cut it in today’s new consumer driven economy. For those who continue, they will usually get removed from their social space by the social network or the people who initially supported them. Unfortunately, these lost souls keep doing the wrong things and we, the consumer, have to watch them floundering around the social networks. This is especially hard to do if you personally know the business person making a fool of themselves and their business online.
What Is There to Get?
The interesting part of the statement these business people make about ‘not getting Social Media’ is if they would take a moment to learn more about it they would find how easy social media is to understand.
In case you are one of those who don’t get it, social media is a form of marketing which uses a personable or social style. Conversation now takes the place of content. Connecting face-to-face online is the more sound method of marketing.
I know this is hard for many of you who like hands off managing and marketing, but eventually you are going to have to ‘get it’ or be so far behind your competitors you will be doing a Google Search for Bankruptcy Attorneys.
Let’s get with it people..the world has changed. Adapting to how things works today will make the changes coming tomorrow much easier to make. Let me know how I can help.
