A few days ago I did get the Mr Business Golf Show with Colleen Wainwright recorded. Those shows are posted below.
What also happened during my visit with Colleen was I caught the ‘communcatrix’ bug. What I mean is, every time I talk to Colleen she puts one or two words together that get me to thinking of something I would probably hvae never thought about. She is very good at that and what is exciting is…Colleen does this and doesn’t even know she is doing it.
She just has a way of painting a picture with words and clears the air so you can see the horizon…you know, like when you take a hot shower and the mirror fogs up and when you open the door and let the steam out the mirror magically clears up. Well, that is what happens when I talk to Colleen. And NOOOO, I have no idea why I thought of the shower analogy.
Now to the point, during the break between our recorded session on my show, Colleen and I started discussing what else we could talk about since we pretty well hammered Twitter into oblivion. I knew something was coming when Colleen took a deep breath (as I have learn is an indicator that you need to sit back because she is going to talk to you for awhile) and started into an analogy on writing good blogs and playing good golf.
Hummm, this floored me because this is the kind of crap you expect me to talk about and here it was coming form someone who plays golf but self proclaims she is terrible at playing golf.
Colleen’s analogy came after I made a comment in our second recording on how well she writes and how I use her blogs as a learning tool that shows a style of writing I would like to do more of. If you have not read Colleen’s stuff, then you need to because she really does put words together well.
What I found thought provoking with what Colleen was telling me was her statement that
‘being able to write well comes from the same thing it takes to being able to play golf well. You have to practice at it…”
I had never thought to think that practicing writing, like what I am doing here, is like standing on the driving range or on the first tee of the golf course. If I don’t practice how can I expect to be good or in the terms I like better…’be comfortable’.
I totally agree with Colleen’s point. Too bad we did not get that part recorded because that conversation was very profound and is exactly the message new bloggers need to hear in order to know how to become a interesting writer.
Blogging is a form of writing practice. Both Colleen and I commented on our past and comparing the style of writing we used a few years ago is nothing how we blog or write today.
The same goes for golf. My golf game is nothing like it was ten years ago when I picked up the game seriously. Why? Well, I not only went to the practice range, but the big key is I went to golf schools and took lessons form professionals.
Like my golf game I have evolved in my blogging. No! I did not say I was perfect or even good in my writing. That is why I look for people like Colleen who have a writing style I like and matches the way I would like to write.
In golf you can get better with watching better golfers. You can also improve your golf with instruction. If you hang around the driving range usually you are not going to see the good golfers. What takes place is you start to think that the guy in the next bay who is hacking a bucket of balls in all different directions is how golf is to be played. Those memories stick in your mind…and it should.
Why? Well, when you take action to learn more about golf you go to a professional and he shows you by demonstrating to you how GOLF looks. What I mean is he/she will show how the golf swing should look…how the golf ball should fly…how you should look…how you should talk. All of the things you need to know so you can improve to the level of golf you enjoy.
The same thing happens in blogging or writing. You hang out here in the blogsphere like at the driving range. On the driving range you take a few shots that fall short of where you were looking and in blogging you post a few blogs that just did not make any sense. However, over time, you will hit one golf ball that makes you think…WOW, can I do this.
Ditto with blogs. You write a good blog and all of the sudden 100 people comment on your point of view or the story you tell..and you go WOW, I wonder if I can do that again?
In both cases, seldom are you able to produce that same golf shot or quality blog. BUT, with practice you start getting a little better and then if you keep it up hitting the golf shot comes easier and the blogging becomes easier…
So, Colleen, thanks again for a great conversation and spending the time you did away from making a living to record these shows. Hope you enjoy them.
