I have been going to TweetUps all around the Dallas, Tx area for almost a year now. Each one of them gets a little more interesting than the next.
This past Thursday I attended the Plano TweetUp in Plano, Texas. It was held at the Urban Crust, ad very well done Pizza Bar with a Rooftop gathering place. As a note, I had a couple slices of a fabulous pizza with a Fig Preserve Paste, Canadian bacon and spinach..I am sure I will be blogging about that experience. The only concern anyone stated about the location was, interesting enough, there was no WIFI…aaaa, a TweetUp with no WiFi!? Maybe 3g is the way to go?
Here I am with Cali Lewis of GeekBrief.Tv listening to Mark Ramsey (not in photo) of Tasty Logic talk about OpenCamp being held in Addison this August.
I never miss an opportunity to catch up with Vicki Harres of PR Newswire.
And of course I have Matt @spamboy to thank for putting out the word on the TweetUp. I am not sure who to thank for the Pizza, but ‘ya hit a home run’ and thanks again,
What is a TweetUp?
For those of you who have no idea what a TweetUp is, it is like all of the other ‘Ups’..MeetUp, WineUp, TrustMeUp, GetUp…Ok, maybe not the GetUp, but you get the idea. A TweetUp is a gathering of people who Tweet or on www.Twitter.com.
The concept of a TweetUp is not revolutionary, but for some a TweetUp is unusual since many people who attend TweetUps are first timers to a gathering of Tweeters. The peeps who attend are usually leaning towards being from the Geek Society. However I am finding more people like me, who are more balanced in the online/offline type of socializing, are filtering in to TweetUp which makes the gatherings a lot more interesting. I make my attendance at a TweetUp a learning experience since almost everyone there has something to teach about Twitter or other tech related products or services.
What Is Talked About?
One of the questions asked a lot at TweetUps is..
What is this about?
Naturally, that question tickles me because when you look around the room what is everyone doing?…Twittering. And since the event is called a TweetUp my natural reaction is to say ..DUH?
But some people are programmed for more structure and many people want purpose to the things they attend. Again, the nature of a TweetUp is not the cutting edge of the change in business and social networking but does symbolize the change in business/social networking so may networking groups have ruined by being so structured.
OH, this does not mean the business cards are not exchanged and the brief ‘What is it you do?’ question is not asked..that is all part of what any type of gathering consist of…the difference with a TweetUp is in how the invitation to attend the TweetUp was made which how else would you expect it to be made but with Twitter. Thus, is the reason why you will not know who will attend these gatherings.
TweetUps to me are exciting and as I mentioned I have been to a few. Some not as good as the others, but it seems with each BAD TweetUp I go to someone who was at that TweetUp decided they could do it better and produces one that is good. Maybe I will blog about what a Bad TweetUp consist of but for now I will stay with how much fun and exciting the Plano TweetUp was to attend. I look forward to more of these gatherings. Hope to see you there.
Le me know how I can help.
