Are You Afraid of Golf?
A few weeks ago I was attending a business network gathering and I was introduced to a new catch word being used…”I’m afraid”.
I had two people come up to me saying..”I’m afraid I have not met you”. I am taking it that the phrase “I’m afraid” is some effort on some people’s part to be politically correct when chatting with someone. However, I found that the phrase was also used as part of other statements they would make during that evening of networking our business needs.
Here is a list of the way this phrased was used by most of the people in that room that evening:
I’m afraid I don’t understand your business model.
I’m afraid I miss the lure golf has to people.
I’m afraid I don’t understand golf.
I’m afraid I have tried golf and failed miserably at it.
I’m afraid it is beyond me to seeing how golf and business connect.
I’m afraid I don’t see where the money is in golf.
I’m afraid I don’t know anyone who plays golf.
I’m afraid I really doing understand what you do.
I’m afraid my opinion towards golf is it is a waste of time.
I’m afraid I am lost in this conversation we are having.
I’m afraid my martini is not strong enough.
I’m afraid we have nothing in common, thanks for coming.
This catch word was said so many times that evening it was absurd. I was concerned for awhile that I was at some therapy group for people who have phobias and anxiety towards things in life. It is true, golf is not for everyone, like NASCAR is not for everyone, but to be afraid of golf is beyond being just interesting..it is sad.
Needless to say..
I’m afraid there are a lot of misguided business people in the world.
