So why do I play golf?

During a normal work day I am asked on average four questions.  On abnormal workdays, like after 2AM on Saturday morning or during my back swing I am asked on average 6 questions.  OH, I am asked even more when I am speaking to groups or being interviewed, but during a work day when I am here in the office I either get an email from someone or someone on FriendFeed will ask me something.

I guess you can say I am the question guy.  Not all of the questions are pertaining to business golf or golf or business.  I get asked questions about everything…what kind of wine do I like?…Why do I ask for three Olives in my martinis?…Why do I blog?  OK, that one was about business but many people don’t understand blogging so when they find out I have a blog site they naturally ask me that question.

I am not sure why people ask me the questions they do.  In some cases it is obvious since I am one of the few experts speaking on business golf, but sometimes the questions I get about golf I don’t think the rules officials for the USGA could answer.  The same goes with some of the questions I am asked by business people.  Some of the business gurus would have trouble answering some of those questions.

Sometimes I think the reason people ask me so many questions is to get back to me for asking them so many questions.  I find asking questions really gets to the bottom of a lot of things I don’t understand .  Like why does a person smoke a cigar?…when I ask them I usually get an answer that is more of an apology than a reason…of course when I asked the girls who smoke cigars I usually get a sentence filled with giggles.

Some of the questions I ask are direct and some are indirect and I know that there may not be a ready answer to many like…

Do you inhale or exhale during your back swing?

I just like finding out what people think or what their opinion is on things.   There are questions I will not ask.  The questions on religion and politics and of course the questions on if golf is a game or sport would be best left alone.

Now for every question I ask, or I am asked, I receive, or give, some sort of answer.  Most answers are easy since they are not new questions, but from time to time I ask or am asked some very interesting questions.

One gentleman asked me why his golf ball went off to the right and why doesn’t his golf ball go any further than it does?  Naturally I had to ask the gent a question so I could answer his question.  I asked..’Are you aware your clubface is open at impact?’  His answer was not unusual by saying ‘Yes’, but the follow-up remark came when I ask ‘how do you knew’.  He said “I can see it is open at impact”.   So my answer was..’Then there is the problem..if you can see that your clubface is open at impact you first are gripping the club with a weak grip and secondly, and probably more importantly, you are swinging way TOO slow”.

There are those questions that have the same answer each time, like..

“Is it good to use a cellphone while playing golf with a client?”  Or “If I play golf with the boss do I let him win?”

Those are the easy ones.

However, I get asked  tough questions from time to time but none tougher to give the same answer to than the one question I am asked the most…

Why do I play golf?

Out of all of the hundreds of questions I am asked this is the one question I find hard to give the same answer twice.

I could quickly say that I play golf because I like it, but the true reason I play is a lot deeper than just because I like playing golf.

Each day I wake up and each time I step up to the tee to play golf I have a different answer to that question.  OH, most all of my answers relate to my love for playing golf but I never am able to give the same exact answer twice.

Sometimes it is  when 5 year old grandson informs me he wants to play golf with me but doesn’t want me to cheat this time by playing the back tees.  He feels I should play with him at the junior tees.  That simple request from that very smart young man I could say is the reason I play golf, but still there is more to it.

Golf to me is a pleasure.  It is an emotion.  No matter how bad I play or good I play or whoever I am playing golf with the thrill of playing golf is the same.

The reason I play golf today is because I like to, but tomorrow it could be because I like who I am playing with.  The next day the reason I play golf maybe because of where I am playing and a year from now it could be similar as today, but I am sure the answer will somehow be different.

Everyone’s reason for playing golf is different, but yet the same.  Some people play golf for a living, but they still play golf because they like to play golf.   I have yet to ask someone why they play golf and they say to play because they hate it.

This is what makes that question tough to answer the same way each time.  However, it is good to be asked that question since it does get me to thinking…Why do I play golf?

So, let me ask that questions of you…Why do you play golf.?
